Meet Peter Kadel, FISTD
Certified Ballroom Dance Instructor, Coach, Choreographer and Adjudicator
Peter Kadel is a highly experienced ballroom dance instructor and Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (FISTD), Ballroom Branch. Professionally trained in London by world-class champions, Peter has spent decades teaching dancers at every level, from complete beginners to advanced competitors and professional instructors.
A former professional ballroom dancer and Pro-Am competitor, Peter has won numerous awards and has trained many successful students. He has also taught Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire instructors and students, and has prepared professional dance teachers for their Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship examinations.
Peter has judged ballroom dance competitions and has taught internationally, including guest teaching engagements in Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao, China, as well as in Cuba and Germany.
During the 1980s, Peter coached U.S. and Canadian ice dance teams in Wilmington, Delaware. He also taught ballroom dance at Temple University for more than ten years.
Peter is particularly well known for his expertise in the Viennese Waltz. He has lectured on its history and culture, served on the Board of the Austrian-American Society of Pennsylvania, and chaired its annual Johann Strauss Ball. When conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch was welcomed to Philadelphia as Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Peter was invited to present an exhibition of the Viennese Waltz.
Peter has also conducted advanced Viennese Waltz seminars aboard the majestic trans-oceanic ship, the Queen Mary II, coaching experienced dancers in styling, variations, technique, and the finer points of this elegant dance.
Peter brings an unusual depth of cultural and academic knowledge to his teaching. A graduate of Villanova University and Temple University, he taught German and History at four area universities for 14 years.
His commitment to cultural understanding has also been recognized beyond the dance world. Former Pennsylvania Governor Bob Casey presented Peter with an Inter-Ethnic Relations Award for his work promoting Jewish-German relations.
What Peter Teaches
Peter teaches both International and American styles, including Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Tango, Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing and Samba. He also teaches Salsa, Merengue, Polka, Irish Waltz and other social dances.
Wedding Dance Choreography
One of Peter’s specialties is creating memorable First Dances for wedding couples. He has choreographed hundreds of wedding dances, tailoring each one to the couple, their music, their personalities and their level of experience.
